Neon Noir

So vieles in unserem Umwelt- und Kulturverständnis dreht sich um Form, Farben und Facetten. Wir werden von der Gesellschaft, in der wir aufwachsen, geprägt, ohne uns dessen bewusst zu sein oder Einfluss darauf nehmen zu können. Die Entscheidung ist bereits gefallen, so funktionieren die Dinge eben. Erst später erkennen wir, dass es andere Wege gibt, in der Welt zu existieren und sie zu gestalten.

Reisen ist für mich so aufregend, weil die Neuheit alles sinnlich beflügelt und die Wahrnehmung schärft. Alltägliche Aufgaben werden zu Abenteuern. Mir wird bewusst, wie wenig ich eigentlich weiß, was mich gleichermaßen überwältigen und begeistern kann. Ich suche im Fremden nach dem Vertrauten, nach einem Ankerpunkt, an dem ich mich in einer mir unbekannten Welt neu orientieren kann.

Auf wie viel von meinem bisherigen Wissen und meiner Erfahrung kann ich mich verlassen? In diesem Graubereich des unvollständigen Verstehens kann ich entdecken, wie mutig, abenteuerlustig und aufgeschlossen ich tatsächlich bin.

Erwartungen sind nicht mehr uneingeschränkt verlässlich und erweisen sich als unzuverlässig. Daher muss auf Grundlage dieser neuen Erfahrungen ein neues System des Verstehens und der Interaktion entwickelt werden. Bisherige Vorstellungen, die so fest verankert schienen, dass sie nie hinterfragt und einfach akzeptiert wurden, geraten ins Wanken.

Die Gabe der Selbstreflexion erwächst aus dem Eintauchen in eine andere Kultur, in das Unbekannte. Ich kann mich selbst distanzieren und das System, in dem ich aufgewachsen bin, hinterfragen. Blindes Akzeptieren weicht sorgfältiger Überlegung. Soll ich am Alten und Vertrauten festhalten? Soll ich es durch Neues ersetzen? Oder werden sich die Systeme miteinander verbinden?

Die Fotos dieser Serie entstanden auf meiner zweiten Reise nach Südkorea. Ich freute mich, an einige vertraute Orte zurückzukehren – Seoul, Pohang und Gyeongju – und war gespannt darauf, mehr vom Land zu sehen: Sokcho, Buyeo, Busan und Jeonju. Meine erste Reise lag fast elf Jahre zurück. Die Fotos dieser Serie spiegeln die vielen Schichten meiner Erlebnisse und Erinnerungen wider.

After years of working with my Nikon, it became my eyes, the ´lens´ through which I viewed the world. The process had become so seamless that despite attempts to change directions, I found myself returning to the familiar.

So much of our environmental and cultural understanding revolves around the many facets of color and shape. We are imprinted by the society we grow up in without having any awareness of it or influence over it. The decision has already been made, this is how things function, it´s only later that we realize that there are other ways of existing in and organizing the world.

Traveling is so exciting to me because the newness of everything stimulates the senses, there is a heightened sense of awareness. Routine tasks turn into adventures. I realize that I am not even aware of what I don´t know, which can also be as overwhelming as it is exhilarating. I look for the familiar in the foreign, a place to anchor and reorient myself a world that is new to me.

How much of my previous knowledge and experience can I rely on? In this gray area of partial comprehension, I can discover how brave and adventurous and open I actually am.

Expectations are not to be fully trusted and become somewhat unreliable, so a new system of understanding and interacting has to be built based on these new experiences. Previous ideas that seemed so solid that they were never questioned and just accepted start to be shaken loose.

The gift of self-reflections come from the immersion in another culture, in the unfamiliar. I am able to step outside of myself and examine the framework in which I was raised. Blind acceptance is replaced with careful consideration. Do hang on to the old and familiar? Do I replace it with the new? Or will the systems synthesize?

The photos in this series were taken on my second trip to South Korea. I was happy to return to some familiar place; Seoul, Pohang and Gyeongju and excited to see more of the country; Sokcho, Buyeo, Busan, Jeonju. My first trip preceded this one by almost 11 years. The photos in this series represent the layering of experience and memory.
